Valuation

  • The supplemental protection offered by moving companies protecting your household goods is called valuation.

All licensed carriers are compelled by regulations to provide a basic level of coverage, however, this would be inadequate for most households in the event of the worst sort of luck. Let us say our moving truck is driving across a bridge in Minneapolis Minnesota and the bridge collapses, or less dramatically a traffic mishap and ensuing fire destroys the truck and its contents. Although this has never happened to Mark the Mover, the loss of entire loads of household goods has occurred in the moving industry and could wipe out your household goods. For a moderate sized household with fifteen tons of household goods, regulations would only provide from $ 2,500 to $ 18,000 worth of coverage, for a moderate sized household, depending on interstate vs intrastate and a myriad of regulations and interpretations. This is why many consumers look at what is called valuation, or a supplemental moving insurance policy. One such company in the business of insuring household goods during relocations can be found on our website.

Still, it is an option to rely on this basic coverage. At Mark the Mover Atlanta Movers we provide two more valuation options for your move, and, as stated, you can opt for full insurance through a different insurance carrier.

  • Per Pound Valuation or Released Value

The standard motor carrier rate for losses of cargo is $0.60 per pound, per article, according to the Department of Transportation's interstate moving regulations. This rate will protect the carrier from paying the actual cost or replacement cost on your items, allowing them to pay a flat predefined rate for a catastrophe. We cannot look at what an item is or what it means to you, only weight of your household goods your move. Additionally, in many situations a cap of $ 2,500, which might vary by state could apply to your entire shipment.

  • Valuation with deductible

Replacement cost valuation is the prudent option for established households and provide coverage based on actually worth. You must purchase a minimum amount based on rooms and size of household.

  • Valuation without deductible

More costly, but covers the first dollar of damage or repair on your household goods.

  • Loopholes

Your possessions are not covered in many of the same situations where homeowners insurance falls short. Broadly defined as Acts of God and Acts of War, the acts of God most often fall into two categories, floods and earthquakes. While damage to structures can be devastating in earthquakes, your household goods are probably not as much at risk, when held by a motor carrier, by an earthquake. Floods are also an Act of God. In the Nashville flooding of 2010, and the Atlanta flooding of 2009 and 2010, many areas of higher ground were hit and hit rapidly. Generally though, a motor carrier moves out of the way of storms when they hold your household goods.
